8. Dead Ringers
This grisly film about Elliot and Beverly Mantle, two twin gynaecologists whose obsession with each other soon meanders in the disturbing, is derived from the real life story of Stewart and Cyril Marcus. The brothers were gynaecologists in New York City who shared everything from appearances to an unhealthy addiction to barbiturates. In 1975, the decaying bodies of these brothers were found in their apartment. The death had been caused due to withdrawal from the drug that had become their life support. A newspaper article described the bodies and the place as 'gaunt and already decayed in their East 63rd Street apartment amidst a little of garbage and pharmaceuticals.' This closely mirrors the climax of the movie Dead Ringers where the brothers hole up in their apartment and slowly decay into oblivion both physically and psychologically.
