Chances are, you've just seen the words Goal of the Dead and chuckled or groaned as you instantly think of the worst movie imaginable.

To its credit, Thierry Poiraud and Benjamin Rocher's 2014 film is far, far better than its wince-inducing title would have you believe.

It's notoriously hard to find a truly great football movie, yet Goal of the Dead tells a fantastic, emotional football tale for its first half. Every bit the cliched 'game of two halves', the picture then begins to fall into genuine horror territory from its midway point.

On the football front, glamourous Olympique de Paris are heading to lowly Caplongue to play a cup game. Amongst the Olympique ranks is Alban Lenoir's Sam Lorit, a player who was beloved by his home town club of Caplongue before turning his back on them for a money-spinning move to Paris.

Where does the horror come into this, then? Given how Lorit is now so hated by his home town and his former club, Caplongue inject one of their players with a potion designed to make them an brutish wrecking ball intent on ending the career of Lorit.

Backfiring spectacularly, the fallout of this is that the player in question turns into a mindless, violent zombie, and he passes this condition onto somebody else by vomiting on them... with that person vomiting on someone else... and lather, rinse repeat, Caplongue finds itself in the middle of a zombie outbreak.
