10 Horror Movies Hated By Critics But Audiences Loved

9. Vampire In Brooklyn

Thirteen Ghosts
Paramount

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 12%

Vampire In Brooklyn was soundly demolished by critics upon release, who dismissed it as a horror-comedy that achieved neither palpable scares nor gut-busting laughs.

But this deeply bizarre and unexpected collaboration between Wes Craven and Eddie Murphy is one of the most fascinating projects that either its director or star has ever been involved with.

This wonderfully deranged fish-outta-water comedy stars Murphy as a vampire skulking around modern day Brooklyn in search of a woman (Angela Bassett) key to his survival.

Murphy and Bassett have terrific chemistry in this ludicrously underrated romp that's at least received its fair share of "this movie is good, actually" retrospective think-pieces in recent years.

It looks great, making the most of its titular setting, is brutal yet hilarious, and offers up a rarest of things - a staunchly Black riff on the historically white vampire movie, several years before Blade made it cool no less.
