10 Horror Movies Nobody Understands

5. Hollower (2016)

The Beyond
Mycho

Written and directed by horror auteur MJ Dixon, this exquisitely creepy psychological horror follows Nathan, a loner suffering from crippling agoraphobia who hasn't left his flat in three years, and his tentative friendship, then romance with the girl next door. The trouble is, Nathan may not live alone after all…

Originally introduced in Dixon's brilliant high concept horror Slasher House, Nathan is possessed by a monstrous force which compels him to commit appalling, gruesome murders while in a fugue state. You know, either that or he’s insane.

Both films leave it up to us to decide, Dixon allowing tantalising glimpses of a dark, ugly figure lurking in the periphery. It’s a typically fearless choice for this gifted director, giving the film a more macabre vibe than Adam Dillon's admittedly impressive performance would be capable of on its own.

But then there’s the end. Caught literally red-handed, locked up, handcuffed, Nathan sees the Hollower in the police station and blacks out. When he returns to himself, the cuffs are off, the police are all dead - and a moment later, Nathan himself is gone.

So did the Hollower manifest physically to free Nathan? Has it been real, corporeal all along? Did it murder the cops, or did Nathan?

Or did someone else spring him, possibly leading into the events of Slasher House, where the baby-faced killer wakes up locked in a mysterious cell?

And that’s not even getting into the speculation about what the Hollower actually is. The Devil? God? Dixon’s not telling...
