10 Horror Movies One Step From Perfection
5. Child’s Play (2019)
Now, admittedly last year's divisive remake of cult horror legend Don Mancini's Child's Play wasn't that close to perfection.
But if you can excuse the casting of Mystery Team's Aubrey Plaza as the mother of a teenager and the film's uncanny valley Chucky re-design, there's plenty of fun to be had in this outing.
The blackly comic slasher revival managed to successfully transform Chucky from a possessed doll into a haywire AI, resulting in a sci-fi inflected remix of the original which didn't attempt to outdo the infamous obscenity of character actor Brad Dourif's iconic original Chucky.
Instead, this effective chiller's clever script took some surprisingly sharp satirical pot shots at Big Tech, amoral corporations, and thoughtless consumerism, as epitomised in its dark opening credits which transition from a glossy ad for the latest gadget to the grim Vietnamese sweat shop where said gadgets are created.
However, a lot of viewers found the mean-spirited deaths of both a pet cat and a loveable old lady to be a touch too much for this goofy teen horror comedy, whose nasty edge wasn't quite justified by a screenplay which also attempted to include a lot of light-hearted comic relief.
