The Alien franchise hasn't known what to do with itself in recent years. Prequel project Prometheus was a box office hit despite mixed fan reception, while 2017's follow-up Alien: Covenant performed far more modestly both commercially and critically, leaving the series' future in doubt.

A follow-up to Covenant, tentatively titled Alien: Awakening, was promptly put on the back-burner as Fox considered the next phase of the franchise, ultimately opting to focus on a TV series set to be overseen by Fargo's Noah Hawley.

Yet development of the show stalled amid the pandemic, and to date its production status remains up in the air.

Following their acquisition of Fox, Disney instead turned their attention back to a new Alien movie, and in March 2022, a standalone Alien film was announced to be directed by Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe).

The movie, Alien: Romulus, will star Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced, and though no plot information is yet available, it actually wrapped shooting mere weeks ago, with a release date set for August 16 of next year.

Though the project was originally set to drop directly on streaming service Hulu, it was recently changed to a major theatrical release, suggesting that those in charge like what they've seen so far.
