10 Horror Movies That Break The Genre

8. Picnic at Hanging Rock

Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock is a very classy mystery drama that could very easily double as a very scary horror film. Influential and critically acclaimed, it's often cited as one of the most famous examples of Australian cinema.

The film is based on the 1967 novel of the same name, and centres on the disappearance of three young schoolgirls and their teacher during a school trip at Hanging Rock. Even though the story is entirely fictional, it is framed as true, which just makes the drama all that more powerful.

The film takes a unique spin to it narrative, putting a keen focus on gorgeous cinematography, eerie music and dramatic editing. It all creates a sinister atmosphere, evening out into a hypnotic, odd, and very strange film.

This movie has a really disturbing story that will scare you to your core. Also, as the film never gives us real closure (the girls’ disappearance is pretty much unsolved by the end of the film), it just makes the story all the more frightening.

Cameron Mcmurdie hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
