10 Horror Movies That Instantly Told You They Were Garbage
4. Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch II
For those who never got around to watching Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project's found footage horror seemed revolutionary in 1999.
Just a year later, a sequel to one of cinema's most profitable releases arrived completely stripped of everything that made the original special. It's centred on a collection of poorly developed characters who endure several of the same beats from the first film. Due to its standard cinematic format, we start to realise how many plotholes and half-baked ideas are on display in the world of the Blair Witch.
We kick off with a scene that totally undermines everything we're about to see. A disclaimer of sorts reveals this is all a dramatic re-enactment of events that followed that Blair Witch film people actually like. From there we get a montage of positive reviews from the time, the creators almost patting themselves on the back right in front of us.
At this point, it's just absurd to believe an actual video of potentially multiple crimes and deaths taking place would be released on the big screen. Surely the missing persons' families, friends etc. would protest and that's before we even get into the various legal implications.
After three minutes of wondering if this film is even worth watching, we're then introduced to several actors who should probably have stuck to their day jobs. It's safe to say at this point that the original Blair Witch flick was lightning in a bottle.
