It's hard to put into words just how big a deal The Blair Witch Project was when it was first released back in 1999.

At a time when the internet was very much in its infancy, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez's picture made the absolute most of this new tool that they found at their fingertips; creating a faux website way ahead of the film's release to generate buzz about a missing persons campaign for the trio at the centre of The Blair Witch Project.

By the time the film made its way out to the masses, there was a genuine curiosity about whether what audiences were seeing was indeed real footage of real people being really tormented in the very real woods.

Looking to make a documentary on the purported urban myth of the Blair Witch, Heather, Josh and Mike's venture into the Burkittsville backwoods saw them disappear one-by-one - first Josh, then Mike, then finally Heather.

While we don't see any of this trio killed on-camera, the implication is that the Blair Witch is a real entity who has lured Heather, Josh and Mike into its clutches; which, if so, means that all three ended up dead.
