10 Horror Movies That Never Got Better Than Their Opening Moments

1. Scream VI

Scream VI begins with the series' most unexpected opening sequence since the first, when Drew Barrymore was shockingly offed before the movie's title card had even appeared.

The latest sequel opens in New York City with film studies teacher Laura Crane (Samara Weaving) waiting to meet a date at a bar. She's called by the apparent guy in question, who claims he can't find the bar and lures her into a nearby alleyway.

But at that moment, the caller's voice changes to Ghostface, and Laura is stabbed to death. And then comes the rub - the killer removes his mask to reveal that he's a young man, Jason (Tony Revolori), who also happens to be one of Tara's (Jenna Ortega) classmates.

And because the shock of seeing a killer unmasked mere minutes into the movie wasn't enough, it's then revealed that Jason and his roommate Greg are Ghostface copycats trying to finish Richie's (Jack Quaid) "movie" from the last Scream film.

The bigger twist, though, is that Jason is then called by another Ghostface, who goads Jason into opening his fridge and finding Greg's dismembered body inside. Then the real Ghostface shows up and kills Jason, complete with the savagely taunting one-liner, "Who gives a f**k about movies?"

It's an opening sequence which seemed to assure fans that Scream VI was going to take some serious creative risks and tinker with the formula in some majorly bold ways.

But alas, while Scream VI benefits from some tight suspense sequences and killer cast chemistry, the third act buckles under the weight of reveals that are both predictable and excessively convoluted.
