10 Horror Movies That Never Got Better Than Their Opening Moments

6. Jeepers Creepers

Jeepers Creepers is often cited as one of the finest examples of a thoroughly mediocre horror movie with an S-tier opening sequence, and it's absolutely true. Those opening 12 minutes are basically a brilliantly accomplished short film in their own right.

The film kicks off with Trish (Gina Philips) and her brother Darry (Justin Long) driving home for spring break when they find themselves being tailgated by a rusted-out vehicle with blacked-out windows and the suspicious license plate, "BEATNGU."

The driver eventually passes but, a few minutes later, they see the very same car parked outside an abandoned church, with the grotesque-looking driver dumping what appear to be corpses down a large pipe.

The driver then reappears in his car and runs the duo off the road before disappearing again.

It's a brilliantly skin-crawling opening which immediately gets the viewer's attention, even if for most that's basically where the story would end - you'd get back on the road and call the cops, right?

It's at this point where Jeepers Creepers start to fall apart - the siblings instead return to the church and investigate, leading to a very, very bad outcome for them both, especially Darry.

That's without getting into the increasingly ridiculous second half of the movie, which loses all credibility one the Creeper sprouts wings. It's a total 180 from the restraint and nerve-shredding suspense of that incredible opening.
