10 Horror Movies That Never Left You
7. Lake Mungo
Lake Mungo is a found-footage doc that analyses the mysterious death of drowned teenager, Alice Palmer. When the Palmer family are contacted by Alice's spirit, they learn she harboured a secret double life, which may have led to her demise.
It's a pity Lake Mungo is the only film Joel Anderson directed, since the underrated filmmaker has an unmistakable talent for storytelling. This "documentary" is unsettling, not just because of the subject matter or gruesome visuals, but the way it makes viewers routinely doubt themselves.
When it looks like the mystery has been solved, another detail is found which puts everything back to square one. Just as the film crew feel like they've figured everything out, there's a revelation that makes them challenge everything they ever believed. Viewers change their mind on what's real and what isn't with such regularity, the whole experience can be quite disorienting.
Also, the rug-pull during the film's closing moments is so unexpected, it encourages viewers to watch Lake Mungo all over again, now they have a greater sense of the tragedy that befell Alice Palmer.
