10 Horror Movies That Sound Terrible (But Are Actually Great)
1. Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
Any sequel to The Blair Witch Project was probably doomed from the start. The first movie was nothing short of a global phenomenon, and how is a sequel supposed to recapture that? Director Joe Berlinger understood that there was no way to do so, and instead he created something completely different.
It was so different that everyone hated it, but if you go into Book of Shadows with an open mind, it has a lot of interesting things going on. The movie takes place in our universe and acknowledges that The Blair Witch Project was a fictional film. From there, it follows a group of characters who visit Maryland to go on a tour of the site where the first movie was filmed. It was a really unique idea at the time for a sequel to have its characters know about the original, and the opening plays on the media frenzy surrounding the first Blair Witch in a clever way. The ending is brilliant and surprising, a creative idea that relies on your assumption that everything you're seeing is 100% true. As one character points out, "Video never lies. Film does, though."
If it was just called Book of Shadows and had nothing to do with the first Blair Witch, it would receive so much more love, but unfortunately, attaching itself to such an iconic film only created unreasonable expectations.
