Alright, I take it back. If there's one thing better than an ending where evil wins, it's one where you genuinely think the good guys have won only to have the salty chips of hope snatched away from you by the swooping seagull of reality.

Desperate to escape a series of underground caves, our plucky gang of adulterous murderers are slowly whittled down by a subspecies of vicious cave-dwelling monsters. Throats are ripped out, skulls are bashed in, some of them get eaten alive but, at long last, Sarah manages to scramble her way up to freedom. She finds her car, drives away, and all looks about as well as can be expected.

Then, of course, it's revealed she's just hallucinating, having hit her head in the caves on her way out. She comes to and finds herself back in the dingy depths with nothing but a comforting vision of her dead daughter and an absurdly well-iced cake for company.

The camera slowly tip-toes away as she's set upon by hordes of the creatures, and the most terrifying movie ever written on the subject of spelunking fades to black with the sound of her screams.
