Darren Aronofsky has a knack for making films that have trouble finding an audience. The Fountain was alienating. Noah upset many religious viewers. Some scenes in Requiem for a Dream are unbearable to watch. Because all of these films bombed, you'd assume Aronofsky would be more careful in the future.

Instead, he wrote and directed a film called mother!, which was seemingly designed to fail financially. Although critics loved it, casual viewers were never going to be onboard with a surreal biblical allegory that concludes with a scene depicting {CENSORED}. Due to its religious themes and deeply disturbing content, it would've been a miracle if mother! made a profit.

It also didn't help mother!'s box-office chances when CinemaScore gave it an "F" grade, making it the 20th film ever to receive this rating. Interestingly, Aronofsky wasn't surprised by this reaction at all. In fact, he defended it, saying, "How if you walk out of this movie are you not going to give it an 'F'?"

Because Jennifer Lawrence was the highest paid actress on the planet at the time, you'd imagine her star-power would've helped bring in the big bucks. Instead, mother! was the most unsuccessful film of Lawrence's career, where she got top-billing.
