The most common question people ask about Paul W.S. Anderson is, "How is that guy still directing movies?"

But the answer is simple. His work makes money.

The same cannot be said about Event Horizon, which is ironically hailed as Anderson's finest film. The sci-fi horror had an uphill battle from the beginning, since it cost $60 million - a huge amount for an R-rated movie in the '90s. And after the critics ripped it to pieces, Event Horizon seemed destined to tank.

So, the big question is why did Event Horizon fail? Okay, bad reviews don't help, but that didn't stop Anderson's other movies becoming smash-hits. So, what gives?

Here's the reality. Because most of Anderson's movies are adaptations from popular mediums, the die-hard fans will check them out, regardless of the quality. Even though Mortal Kombat, Alien vs. Predator, and the six Resident Evil movies were eviscerated by critics, they brought in a lot of dough.

Sadly, Event Horizon didn't have that luxury, since it was an original property. Once the masses saw the initial reception was mostly negative, there was little incentive to check the film out.
