Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem -- better known simply as Eternal Darkness -- is a psychological horror game of the highest order, blending Resident Evil-eqsue survival horror gameplay with an overall more cerebral experience featuring multiple pathways resulting in different enemies and outcomes.

In Eternal Darkness, players take on the role of various different characters, dispersed across four locations and times from 26 BC to 2000 AD, as they battle a powerful entity who must be prevented from enslaving humanity.

Going further than any game before it, Eternal Darkness brings "Sanity Effects" to the table, a feature that forces players to keep track of their sanity meter, which decreases when spotted by an enemy. Consequences of a drop in sanity include skewed camera angles and bleeding walls, as well as larger, meta effects such as simulated errors of the TV and console, which many players have mistaken for legitimate malfunctions.

Developed by Silicon Knights and published by Nintendo, the game was originally planned for the N64, but, like a number of other games around this time, was switched to the GameCube for development, utilising the new platform's greatly expanded memory and graphics capacity.

Widely praised by reviewers and players, Eternal Darkness won a raft of awards and has come to be known as one of the greatest games ever made, despite not being a commercial success at the time.
