Resident Evil is a 2002 remake of the cult classic 1996 PlayStation game of the same name, which took everything fans loved about the original and made it bigger and better. Set in 1998 near the fictional Raccoon City, a series of grisly murders have taken place and it is down to S.T.A.R.S. agents Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine to investigate.

Part of a deal between Capcom and Nintendo, which was no doubt designed to cash in on the arrival of the Resident Evil movie the same year, the game was released exclusively for the GameCube in 2002, much to PlayStation fans' chagrin.

Taking control of either Redfield or Valentine, players get to return to Raccoon City with upgraded graphics, a series of new gameplay mechanics, updated puzzles, new areas to explore and even a few new plot points, including an entire subplot that was written out of the original game.

Upon release, Resident Evil received widespread critical acclaim from critics and fans alike, who to this day recognise it as one of the very best, most terrifying and most visually outstanding entries in the entire franchise -- which is saying a lot for a 20-year-old game.

As might be expected, the game was remastered for seventh and eighth generation consoles in 2015, receiving the same level of fanfare as the 2002 version.
