10 Huge Disaster Movies That Scientists Called Bullsh*t (And Why)
2. Tornados Work In The Opposite Way - Twister (1996)
The Disaster: Bill and Jo Harding are advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce. As Bill and his new partner track down Jo with a fresh copy of their divorce papers for her to sign, they start to encounter a spot of bad weather. When they reach Jo they discover that she has used Bill's work to design four tornado research machines, and she plans to put them smack bang in the middle of the next extremely violent tornado that comes along. Before long, the pair are storm chasing together once more, though it may be for the last time. Why It's Bullshit: Twister is one of the most beloved bad weather movies out there, but it's also one of the most unrealistic, with incorrect storm cloud formations just the tip of iceberg. The first thing you notice about the tornadoes themselves is that air and debris rushes outwards from them, when in reality it's the opposite, with anything near by being sucked toward the column. On top of that, the tornadoes seem to have minds of their own, changing direction from east to west as if they just remembered they left the oven on. Tornadoes do alter their path and change in intensity, but they don't suddenly make U-turns, nor do they appear in a sky that was picturesque only moments before. Also, the fact that Bill and Jo constantly give the tornadoes a rating on the Fujita-Pearson Tornado Intensity Scale as soon as they catch a glimpse is nonsensical, as they are actually rated on how much damage they eventually cause.
