The Luftwaffe pilots are easily picked out in Dunkirk's aerial battle sequences because of the yellow markings on the noses of their Me109s. Tellingly, the 109s aren't that at all, but Spanish HA-1112-M1L Buchons, which were versions of the Me109 manufactured under licence by Spain after the war. The Buchons have a long history of standing in for the 109s since airworthy examples of the real thing are extremely rare.
Meanwhile in Blighty's corner are the Spitfires. The Spits are such gorgeous beasts it's easy to ignore the details of the markings stencilled on them, but the world's air war enthusiasts overcame their dewy-eyed admiration long enough to notice they're missing a unit identifier to go with the squadron number.
