10 Huge Mistakes In Marvel's Cinematic Universe

5. The Mandarin (Iron Man 3)

Iron Man 3

SPOILER WARNING FOR IRON MAN 3. I've already spoken at length about this, but the twist in Iron Man 3 really hampered the experience for me; I enjoyed the first act, but the mid-film reveal that The Mandarin was, in fact, a decoy, seemed like a total waste of the character.

Ben Kingsley has the likeness of the character, but it is completely pawned off as a postmodern joke, while Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian instead plays the main antagonist, professing to be the "real" Mandarin despite looking nothing like the comic book counterpart.

Though the critical reception has been very strong, the fan backlash has been equally vocal, noting a certain degree of disrespect for the very fans who have allowed these films to have huge box office grosses. It seems like a po-faced move to try and surprise viewers rather than just focusing on satisfyingly portraying a beloved villain from the comics. Though not everyone will be bothered by it, for me it really distracted from the good things the film did (the action and the humour).
