10 Huge What Ifs That Could Have Changed The MCU Forever
8. What If Edgar Wright Directed Ant-Man?
Marvel Studios have never exactly been lauded for the amount of creative control that they hand over to their directors, and while the men behind the camera invariably get the job done, the vast majority of the movies don't tend to bear any unique visual or stylistic fingerprints, and fall back into the MCU's overly-safe established in-house style.
Edgar Wright hit the nail on the head when he said that he wanted to make a Marvel movie, but they didn't want to make an Edgar Wright movie, and as a result Ant-Man turned out to be one of the least interesting installments in the franchise from a technical perspective in the sound yet workmanlike hands of Peyton Reed.
If Kevin Feige and his team had just bitten the bullet and given Wright free rein over Ant-Man, it could have led to an increase in the amount of authority and imprint that the directors hold over the MCU. Instead, most of the movies opt for the serviceable over the spectacular, and functionality over freshness.
The Russo brothers are Marvel's favorite filmmakers because they're the best at the in-house style, and with the exception of Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok and Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, the vast majority of these movies could have been made by just about anyone.
