10 Hugely Successful Movies You Didn't Realise LOST Money

2. Justice League

Batman Returns
Warner Bros.

The story of Justice League is a legendary one. It is one that everyone knows, so repeating it is pointless. The crux of it is that Warner Bros. spent a lot of money on the production of this film ($300 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made), and did not anticipate the box office fallout.

See Justice League made only $600 million, a large sum for sure, but not one even close to matching the production and marketing costs.

The production budget was never meant to exceed $300 million, but because of expensive re-shoots and a long time in post, the budget bloomed out of control.

The $600 million that the film made is the lowest of any in the DCEU and cements Justice League (at least the theatrical version) as a total box office failure.

We have the Synder Cut coming in 2021 that promises to rewrite the wrongs that the theatrical cut made. The excitement among fans is tangible. But the damage that the theatrical cut made at the box office can't be undone.

Although, the $1 billion gross of Joker probably helped weather those losses.
