10 Iconic Batman Comics That Should Be Movies (But Won't Ever Be)
6. Batman: Gotham By Gaslight
The Elseworlds series of comics threw DC's most iconic characters into brand new time periods and settings, often to mixed results. One of the most successful was the first official Elseworlds one-shot titled Gotham By Gaslight. As the name might suggest, those wondering what a Victorian-era Batman would be like don't need to worry now, as that's the very conceit explored by this title. The origin story remains largely the same here, poor little rich boy loses his parents to crime, but the key difference here is that after visiting London to train himself for revenge, Bruce is followed back to Gotham by Jack the Ripper. Plonking the World's Greatest Detective in the middle of one of the most notorious murder mysteries known to the Western world makes perfect sense from a writers point of view and fortunately, Brian Augustyn's tight plotting makes full use of this gloomy setting to great effect. Obviously, a cinematic adaptation of anything remotely like this hasn't been attempted yet. Studios are still working hard to bring more of their beloved characters to life in a traditional sense, adapting iconic characters and story lines that will appeal to both die-hard fans and purists alike. However, as audiences potentially grow weary of the genre somewhere later down the line, it would make sense for studios to test out new interpretations of their most popular characters. The obvious choice here would be Batman, the comic book equivalent of Madonna in terms of reinvention, but it would take a very adventurous producer indeed to even consider green-lighting such a project.
