10 Iconic Comic Book Movie Moments That Were Totally Improvised
9. The Mask - Sorry, Wrong Pocket
The Mask is a comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics from 1991 to 1995. It does include the character Stanley Ipkiss, but also details many other protagonist's journey with the possessed mask.
The film focuses solely on Ipkiss who encounters the magical mask which brings out his exuberant, troublesome alter ego. When wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes both confident and mischievous, and draws some unwanted attention to himself from mafia gangsters.
There is one scene that stands out though. After being chased down an alleyway by gang members, Ipkiss reaches a dead end. In an attempt to distract his pursuers, Ipkiss hosts a fake circus act.
He pulls balloons out of his pocket and makes them into fun animals much to the delight of the gangsters. On one instance, Ipkiss pulls a used condom out of his pocket and throws it away after cheekily saying "sorry, wrong pocket."
This line is one of the more mature moments in the film and it was entirely improvised by Carrey. It not only showcases Carrey's natural talent for witty remarks, but also highlights the freedom he is given in his work - even in films geared towards a younger audience.
