10 Iconic Images From Alfred Hitchcock Films

10. Floating Head

The nightmare sequence in Vertigo, for me, is one of the most unsettling of its kind in all of cinema, especially the shot of the ghost of Carlotta. The most iconic image from that sequence, however, is the floating head of Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) as it zooms forward, the colour of the background changing constantly. It's a trippy effect that was ahead of its time, and it emphasizes the image and theme of falling that's prevalent throughout the whole film, as well as the notion that Scottie is a man stuck in his own twisted mind.
