6. Got Milk?

In Suspicion (1941), Lina (Joan Fontaine) thinks her husband Johnnie (Cary Grant) may be trying to kill her. One scene that plays on this tension is when Johnnie brings her a glass of milk, which may be poisonous. To make the glass seem more sinister, Hitchcock hid a light in it. The contrast between the milk's brightness and Grant's shadowy figure is quite ominous. This moment is even more disturbing when one considers the fact that in the original cut of the film, Johnnie actually did poison the milk, but then doomed himself when he mailed a letter that Lina wrote. Joan Fontaine has said " did kill me in the original cut, but at a preview, the audience simply refused to accept him as the murderer."
