Marvel took a considerable risk on the Guardians of the Galaxy, who were, unlike other MCU properties, almost unknown to a large audience. The ensemble, the writing, and the genuine laughs in GotG turned it into another MCU hit, making Star Lord, Drax, Rocket, et al. into household names.

One of Peter Quill / Star-Lord's most endearing traits is that he's never quite the badass he makes himself out to be. While filled with confidence, it isn't always backed up by reality - witness his great exchange with Thor at the end of 'Endgame' about who the true captain is.

In GotG, a key scene involves taking the Power Stone to the Collector, a cosmic being of immense importance. Just before delivery, Peter drops the Orb containing the Stone, which we have been told repeatedly was a source of great, yet unstable power that would immediately impact anything it touched. It was a throwaway joke to cut some tension.

But it wasn't supposed to happen.

Chris Pratt accidentally dropped the Orb prop, but stayed in character and recovered it quickly. Director James Gunn loved the flub as it added to Pratt's portrayal of Star-Lord as a cocky badass who really isn't either, and left it in.
