10 Incredible 2017 Movie Characters
5. Buddy - Baby Driver
Despite his 5 years as TV's most charming antihero, Jon Hamm has rarely found a role on film that makes full use of his talents. His appearances in movies tend to be supporting roles that don't allow him the same range that a half decade on Mad Men showed us he has. So who would have thought that his best movie role to date would be as the antagonist of a non-stop heist comedy?
Buddy is an immediately likable character. Hamm's signature charm immediately makes him stand out as something of an older brother figure to Baby in their ragtag family unit. Much of the time, he's wrapped up in his lover Darling, but whenever he talks to Baby, he gives sage advice (i.e. "the next time Doc calls, don't pick up."). The script hints he was once a stock broker on Wall Street, implying a dark social commentary underlying Buddy's charming exterior.
And then, two thirds through the movie, Darling dies. Like a switch, Buddy changes from suave and implacable antihero to an unhinged force of nature. The confrontation between him and Baby at the end of the film is one of the standout action scenes of the year, and allows Jon Hamm to let go without getting too hammy.
