10 Incredible Female Horror Directors You May Not Have Heard Of
1. Julia Ducournau
Ducournau's raging first feature Raw is the most recent film to grace this list. The French body-horror film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in the International Critics Week, and the film deserved such an honor. Raw follows Justine, played by a thoroughly creepy Garance Marillier, a young veterinary student who eats meat for the first time in school.
Justine's transgression delves sharply yet deftly into a deep need for human flesh. Ducournau's portrayal of an innocent girl corrupted not only by her environment, but by her body itself is a dark and bloody take on a coming of age film. Raw's themes of budding sexuality, peer pressure, and sisterhood elevate the film from your run of the mill horror flick to a true work of art.
Ducournau will hopefully go on to deliver more prime horror thrills.
