10 Incredible Films That Bombed At The Box Office

7. Blade Runner 2049

Phantom Thread
Warner Bros.

Production Budget: $150 Million

Box Office Earnings: $259 Million

Blade Runner 2049 is an extraordinary motion picture and one of the greatest sequels ever produced. It tells the story of K, a replicant blade runner, who discovers a life-changing secret during one of his assignments. What follows is a search for answers that could change the fabric of society.

It may not seem like Blade Runner 2049 flopped at the box office based on the numbers above, but producers said the movie needed to make about $400 million to break even. It fell well shy of that mostly due to slow pacing, a complex theme, and long runtime. Ridley Scott stated that he would have cut a half hour out of the film. That may have increased Blade Runner 2049's earnings, but it would have damaged its reputation in the long run because it is near perfect as is.

It is disappointing that A-listers Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford were not a big enough draw for general movie goers. They display some remarkable acting, as do all members of the supporting cast. Denis Villeneuve's expert direction received plenty of critical approval, but the same cannot be said commercially. Despite its relatively low gross, Blade Runner 2049 features stunning cinematography, incredible visual effects, and a compelling story. The box office performance was forgettable, but the film itself is anything but.
