10 Incredible Movie Easter Eggs That Went Totally Over Your Head

2. There's A Hidden Waldo In A Single Frame Of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto

Apocalypto

This has got to be one of the most downright insane movie easter eggs to have ever been included in a movie, and that probably shouldn't be too surprisingly when I tell you that the movie in question was directed by Mel Gibson, who - we can only assume - is certifiably "off his rocker." Going by this inclusion, it's proof enough, anyway.

So let's slow down for a minute here and consider Apocalypto, a genuinely great and brutal movie about the end of the Mayan civilisation. Now recall the movie where Jaguar Paw falls into that mass grave. For some totally bewildering, unexplained reason, Mel Gibson decided that - for a singular frame at this part of the movie - he'd include a shot of human being dressed as Waldo (the famous stripy-clad fellow whose job is to make himself hard to spot in all those kids' books). Yes, in this very serious and gruesome scene, Gibson opted to have somebody dress up like Waldo and lay on top of all the dead bodies. That was how he spent a brief period of time and money on the set of his movie. Doing this.

It was so important that it had to go into the movie. This frame has been removed from the DVD edition, but was included in the theatrical release of Apocalypto, in a move which Gibson presumably orchestrated to try and drive his audience as insane as him. Though this probably should be really, really funny, there's something oddly disturbing about it.

The way that Waldo is lying, dead, with an arrow through his head, in one of the movie's most horrific sequences - it's just wrong. But maybe Mel Gibson is a genius and this is actually a brilliant deconstruction of easter eggs in general. I said "maybe."
