4. Apocalypse Now
What Won Instead: Kramer vs. Kramer I have to imagine that at the time, Kramer vs. Kramer was a film about a subject matter that was completely untouched. Its the story of a couple going through a divorce with a child stuck in the middle. It might have broken new ground in 1978, but watching the film now, it seems a little sappy because of all the films that have been released in the subsequent years that have ripped it off. That being said its not a bad film. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep are great in it and both earned Academy Awards for their respective performances, but it all seems fairly inconsequential when you put this film up against Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now is an epic that legendarily almost ruined Francis Ford Coppola financially and mentally. Thats not something to glorify but the passion that Coppola infused into this project shows on the screen. Its an epic with a remarkable scale, amazing performances, and is a classic. Tons of classic lines came from this film and endless parodies. Name one line from Kramer vs. Kramer.
