10 Incredible Performances The Academy Ignored This Year
5. Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose)
Jessie Buckley has been quietly going about making a name for herself on the British theatre and television scene over the last few years, with her work on the West End in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, BBC's Taboo and War and Peace, all firmly establishing her as one of the next big stars to break out of the U.K.
Yet, it was her role in Wild Rose as Rose-Lynn Harlan which really caught people's eye in 2019. Playing a single mother, fresh out of jail and determined to make it as a country singer, Buckley convincingly portrays a character who you loathe, love and most importantly understand by the end of the picture. Oh, and my god can this woman sing!
So, after receiving a BAFTA nomination for her work on the film, a large amount of industry professionals had Buckley tipped as an outside bet Oscar nominee. But, it wasn't to be come the time of the announcements.
Buckley still has time on her side and will no doubt add more impressive turns to her burgeoning CV, with this year's Best Actress winner Renee Zellwegger openly labelling her Judy co-star as a 'superstar'.
The future looks bright, but she still should've made this year's list in your writer's personal opinion.
