10 Incredible Performances The Academy Ignored This Year
6. Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers)
At the start of 2019, if I told you we would be talking about Jennifer Lopez as a potential Oscar contender by the end of the year, you probably would have choked on whatever you were eating/drinking at the time.
Yet, here we are and thanks to J-Lo's surprisingly nuanced fall from grace as con-woman/veteran stripper Ramona Vega in Hustlers, the star was realistically seen at one point to be a nailed on Oscar nominee.
As we all know, that didn't turn out to be the case.
Lopez did manage to get herself nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actress category, however, and even earned a nod in the Razzie's Redeemer Award category.
Maybe the Academy couldn't see past the immediate aesthetic of a group of strippers being the focus of the film's attention, but once you scratch the surface you are rewarded with a narrative which some even labelled as 'Goodfellas in a G-string'.
Hustlers was brave enough to show the true underbelly of the man's world these characters occupy, so it's just a shame that the Academy weren't brave enough to reward Lopez' quality throughout the surprise hit.
