And now to the actor who in fact won that very same Golden Globe award which previous entries Daniel Craig and Eddie Murphy were both nominated for.

As Elton John, Taron Egerton was an absolute revelation in Rocketman. That may sound like I'm discounting Egerton's impressive work prior to donning the various eccentric garments and glasses of the British music icon, but it's merely a recognition of just how high he raised the bar for himself in this musical biopic.

Telling John's story through the eyes of the star himself, Egerton exudes flamboyance, vulnerability and an ability to hold a tune in the same vein as John - which few actors could have replicated.

The fact that he received the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes showed you just how highly the industry regarded his performance. However, the Academy appeared not to care much for Egerton's turn and therefore chose to completely ignore his valiant efforts when they announced their final list of nominations for each category.

Rocketman's original song, "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" did actually go on to win an Oscar on the night for Best Original Song, but that still doesn't mask over the blatant disservice done to Egerton at this year's event.
