The William Shatner-directed fifth Star Trek film is near-universally accepted to be the worst of the lot, and while none of the Trek films are truly terrible, it's by far the one most easily forgotten.

That is, except, for its single truly inspired scene, in which the villainous Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) uses a mind-meld to lay Bones' (DeForest Kelley) deepest torment bare.

At this point, Bones re-experiences the pain of euthanising his terminally ill father, before revealing that a cure for his condition was discovered shortly after his death, an agony that Bones has carried with him ever since.

It's a beautifully acted scene and undeniably one of DeForest Kelley's finest moments during his entire tenure playing Bones, lending heartbreaking backstory to one of Trek's most beloved characters.

It's just unfortunate that it's so often forgotten by all but the most die-hard Trekkies, being part of such an aggressively "whatever" entry into the franchise.
