10 Incredible Sets You Didn't Know Were Built From Scratch
6. Metropolis (Metropolis)
From the Great Wall of Babylon in Intolerance to the Chariot Arena from Ben-Hur, plenty of old movies have boasted some massive sets. Impressive as they were, it's not exactly hard to fathom that they would have had to be built, since there was no option to fake them digitally. Metropolis, however, was an outlier. Despite being made in 1927, it seems frankly impossible that the futuristic city had been constructed by hand. This was literally the dystopic city that inspired nearly every science-fiction metropolis since and there seemed to be no explanation for how it came into existence. Behind the scenes tells the whole tale of course, and thanks to the creative use of miniatures, models, paintings and mirror tricks, a bustling city complete with a massive Tower Of Babel was built on a small-scale. Even now, though its clearly not real, its insanely impressive that it was built, not because of its size, but because of the creativity it took to make it happen.
