10 Incredibly Smug Movie References You Might Have Missed

8. Cedar Rapids - Clay's Omar Impression

Cedar Rapids
Fox Searchlight Pictures

Part-way through Miguel Arteta's wayward comedy Cedar Rapids starring Ed Helms, one of his leading actors - Isaiah Whitlock offers a rather blatant acknowledgement of his most famous (and most successful role.) To scare off some thugs, Whitlock, who played Senator Clay Davis in the iconic show, and whose character is an unashamed fan of the show, in a rather self-congratulatory move, offers an impression of Wire co-star Michael K Williams, who played Omar Little.

This might be a rather indulgent move by Arteta and the script-writers (it always feels a little dirty when someone pays homage to the former works of their talent during their own project) but at least they had Whitlock mimic Omar, rather than simply trotting out his own character's catchphrase. Okay, so it's also fan service, but it seems slightly reductive to Whitlock to have him consciously acknowledge work he's never going to better.
