10 Independent Films In 2014 That Could Appeal To Mass Audiences

8. The Dance Of Reality

Over forty years ago, a Chilean writer/director/composer, all-round auteur named Alejandro Jodorowsky released a Western like no other called El Topo. It went almost completely unnoticed until years later when it was played at late night film circuits specialising in offbeat experimental flicks, and it blew up. Jodorowsky's style has gone on to influence tens of landmark filmmakers, including David Lynch, Gaspar Noe, Quentin Tarantino, and even musicians like Kanye West. Jodorowsky went on to make other classics, notably the Holy Mountain, but fell off the map after 1990. This year marks his return to filmmaking with Dance of Reality, a semi-autobiographical film about his experience growing up in Chile and living through the Chilean coup d'etat. Not only does it have his trademark unlike-anything-you've-ever-seen surreal visuals, but boasts an emotional story to back them up. Basically, it's going to be an even more surreal version of Pan's Labyrinth. Why It Has Mass Appeal: Look at that trailer - it's insane, and there's a very good chance that the film is unlike anything else you've seen. Fans of weird Youtube videos will be pleased to hear that this is basically a feature-length one. Why It Won't Get A Wide Release: Look at the trailer. It's insane. Movie executives treat new ideas, subtlety and creativity like arachnophobics treat black widows. Even though "random" videos seem to go viral on the internet all the time, executives still haven't clued in that people want uncommon, fresh, and original entertainment that engages them.
