10 Independent Films In 2014 That Could Appeal To Mass Audiences
5. Under The Skin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGDnbcq0BkU Jonathan Glazer's previous two films, Sexy Beast and Birth, are films that challenge our fantasies. Birth was a beautifully shot and massively underrated film starring Nicole Kidman, setup a Tom Hanks in Big-like premise, only to completely pull the rug out from under it, showing the pathetic creepiness behind our fantasies. Under the Skin looks to do the same for the femme fatale genre, starring the internet's favourite masturbatory fantasy Scarlett Johansson as an alien out to mate and then murder unsuspecting human men. If you're thinking, "isn't that the plot of Species?" you'd be half right, but Glazer is much smarter than to rehash a piece of Syfy garbage. Even just looking at the absolutely jaw-dropping trailer tells you that isn't going to be like anything you've ever seen. Why It Has Mass Appeal: Three words: Scarlett Johansson naked. Why It Won't Get A Wide Release: The unique visual aspect of Under the Skin confuses executive's simple sensibilities, and so they probably think it will confuse the masses as well.
