10 Independent Films In 2014 That Could Appeal To Mass Audiences

2. Oculus

One of the best reviewed films of the last Toronto Film Festival was a horror film named Oculus. A horror movie that reviews well comes once in a blue moon, and that's reason enough to get excited. The whole film revolves around the Borgesian conceit of a potentially-haunted antique mirror, which may or may not drive people to Jack Torrence-levels of insanity. If it sounds familiar, it's because it is, but also reviewers are saying it's completely new. Remind you of something? Probably The Conjuring or Insidious, two of the most profitable films of the past year, coincidentally both horror movies. Why It Has Mass Appeal: Oculus should be no.1 on every horror buff's most anticipated list. So far, it's been compared to The Shining. This has the potential to be the next big horror success-story. Why It Won't Get A Wide Release: I actually think it might. The producers of Insidious, Sinister, and Paranormal Activity have proven that they can sell any new decent horror picture as the next Exorcist, so let's hope the lightning strikes four times.
