The fourth entry of the Indiana Jones franchise was nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be- well until the aliens arrived anyway. Shia LaBeouf was definitely a poor choice as Young Indy, but Harrison Ford was still good in the lead role, the return of Karen Allen as Marion worked well and a quality ensemble cast including a hilarious John Hurt made for entertaining fare.

Then came that ludicrous plot twist and wooden dialogue that undid all the fun. With Hurt's insane character 'Ox' holding the mythical skull aloft, Indy delivers a line that sunk any hopes of a decent resolution- "It wants to give us a gift. A big gift".

The line is delivered with minimum enthusiasm by Harrison Ford, perhaps realising how idiotic it sounded and what was to follow. The realisation that 'it' is an actual real life alien, the climax proved to be an overblown stinker.

Physicalising the aliens was a poor choice, but better dialogue to build up to this moment could have made it more tolerable. But mention of 'a big gift' just sounded tacky and the reveal of the 'gift' being a stack of knowledge was hugely anticlimactic.

Previous entries in the franchise may have utilised mythical objects like the lost arc and the Holy Grail, but they were at least grounding in legend. Having aliens tacked on at the end wanting to give us a 'big gift' just felt totally out of place in an Indiana Jones film.
