10 Infamous Movie Box Office Bombs That Cost Obscene Money
1. Dolittle
Robert Downey Jr.'s first move after his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had drawn to a close in the biggest movie of all-time, and his first role of any kind in six years where he wasn't playing Tony Stark, was arguably the biggest misstep of his entire career as Dolittle quickly became one of the biggest box office bombs in history.
The first Doctor Dolittle movie had tanked in 1967, so at least the most recent version lived up to its predecessor in one way. Woeful reactions from test audiences let to three weeks of hugely expensive reshoots, pushing the budget for the family-friendly fantasy up to the preposterous $175m mark in an effort to inject more comedy and broaden the appeal.
Incredibly, the sort of 'hilarious' ideas they came up with during the reshoots led to Dolittle's most infamous and talked-about scene, where the good doctor performs a colonoscopy on a dragon and removes several skeletal corpses and a set of bagpipes from the creature's rear end, with the aid of a leek that was handed to him by a talking duck with a prosthetic leg voiced by Octavia Spencer. Yes, that happens, and is exactly the reason why nobody should be surprised that the movie failed.
