Bruce Almighty had earned over $480m at the box office, so a sequel was almost an inevitability even though Jim Carrey had opted against returning. However, the decision to green-light a follow-up with a budget the size of a Fast and Furious movie was a questionable one, and ultimately ended up blowing up in the studio's face.

No comedy should cost $175m, especially a sequel to a popular movie that didn't even feature the return of the original's leading man, proven draw and entire selling point. Nobody seemed to realize this at the time, and the higher-ups at Universal only had themselves to blame if there was any sort of surprise around the boardroom when Evan Almighty flopped hard.

The focus appeared to be on making the most of the substantially increased effects budget at the expense of actually trying to make anybody laugh, and it only reinforced the notion that sequels to Jim Carrey movies that don't feature Jim Carrey are destined for failure.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
