The "Plot Hole"

How was Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) able to re-attach the iconic Raquel Welch poster to cover the hole he escaped through? Doing so from inside the hole would be physically impossible.

The Explanation

This one's easily explained: he didn't. The poster is large enough to cover the entirety of the hole without blowing around in the draughty confines of a prison cell, and so Andy simply didn't bother securing the bottom corners to the prison wall.

It's even demonstrated earlier in the film when we see Andy digging the hole with his head under the poster, confirming that it was only attached at the top.

And so, when Andy made his escape, all he had to do was make sure the poster was sufficiently draped over the hole.
