A lot of camping, a big fallout and a little bit of action. No, it's not a couple's holiday in the Pennines; it is the penultimate instalment of Warner Bros' beloved Harry Potter film franchise.

While there is much to love about The Deathly Hallows - Part 1, it falls prey to the curse of first-parters: chances are, if a film is being divided in two, the best is being saved for last (doubly so if its source material is a novel). Hallows Part 1 lays all of the groundwork for the second film, bringing characters into position and building the dramatic tension like nobody's business, but then audiences are left well and truly wanting. Such is the curse of transplanting the entire third act into an entirely separate film.

Upon first announcement of the split, rumours were abound of the films running back to back in one mammoth cinema showing, but these were swiftly quashed. Studio executives recognised the earning potential of two separate releases, wagering that anyone who saw the first would go to see the second - a wager that payed off, with Part 1 taking $960 million at the box office, and Part 2 being swept away with $1.3 billion (on a shared budget of $250 million).

While the Potter franchise was neither the first nor last to do this, and definitely not the worst (looking at you, Twilight and The Hobbit), fans were still perturbed by the lack of a meaningful conclusion. Nonetheless, Hallows Part 1 went on to find favour with critics, receiving praise for almost every element of the production, save the anticlimactic ending; and it continues to be looked on fondly by the fandom, most viewers having resigned themselves to the fact that this film was never really meant to be viewed on its own.
