10 Insane Movie Theories You Won't Believe

8. The Big Lebowski's Donny Is A Ghost

That one's a little kooky, so let's bring things back down to Earth...sort of. We hope we're not spoiling The Sixth Sense for anybody, but - SPOILERS! - the twist ending where Bruce Willis's therapist character is revealed to have been a ghost all along is one of the most shocking in movie history. Even if it doesn't necessarily make sense on a second viewing, you can see that M Night Shyamalan had planted little clues to the reveal throughout the film, as Willis is never seen talking to anyone except Haley Joel Osment's traumatised kid - you know, the one who sees dead people. Nobody else interacts with him, touches him, even acknowledges his presence. Because he's a ghost, and people are pretty rude to ghosts. Always giving them the cold shoulder. Or is it the other way around? We forget, it's been a while since we watched it. Or Most Haunted.

Once again, that's a framework that some enterprising film theorists have taken and applied to over movies. Like, for example, the zany Coen Brothers stoner mystery flick The Big Lebowski. It's a film with a particularly colourful cast of characters, but most entertaining amongst them is the double act of John Goodman's highly-strung Vietnam vet Walter and Steve Buscemi's hapless Donny. The Dude, Jeff Bridge's clueless "hero", never actually interacts with Donny in the film, despite them being on the same bowling team. Walter's the one who's always yelling at him for interrupting and not paying attention, wandering into conversations halfway through like a lost child. Which might be because Donny is a ghost, either literally or figuratively €“ either way, he's most likely one of Walter's buddies from Vietnam, haunting him as a form of shellshock. Or we could be talking nonsense, we're kinda out of our element.
