10 INSANE Movies You Won't Believe Are Getting Made
8. El Conde
Pablo Larrain is nothing if not a singular filmmaker whose prior biographical dramas - Jackie and Spencer - have firmly distinguished themselves from all others.
And so, it was reasonable to expect the same left-field treatment for the director's new film chronicling the life of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet - yet not quite like this.
El Conde (aka The Count) isn't merely a surreal, heightened biopic but a dark comedy-horror film which reimagines Pinochet as a 250-year-old vampire who seeks death. Yup.
The recently released trailer does a fantastic job selling the sheer WTF factor of the premise, as well as Larrain's gorgeous monochrome visuals and savagely satirical approach to the dictator's life.
Nobody's going to expect a rigid history lesson from this movie, but a fascinating, hilarious, and blood-soaked sliver of alt-history? Absolutely.
In addition to the extensive awards hype - it's a buzzy contender for the Best International Film Oscar - El Conde lands on Netflix on September 15, ensuring there's barely any time left to wait.
