10 Insane Things You Won’t Believe Movies Spent Money On

3. Everything About The Snyder Cut - Justice League ($70,000,000)

Justice League Snyder Cut
Warner Bros.

The theatrical version of Justice League was a nightmare to make behind-the-scenes. Outside of the script rewrites and troubled shooting, director Zack Snyder had to step down from his role following a personal tragedy, and he was replaced by Joss Whedon, who changed much of what Snyder had put in motion - including adding a lighter tone, more humour and less world-building.

The film was released to poor reviews, causing Warner Bros to allow Snyder the chance to make the film he always set out to shoot. Known as the "Snyder Cut," the film is reported to cost $70 million (excluding marketing), and will be released a four-part mini-series on HBO Max in 2021.

Though the general plot of the film will be the same as the theatrical cut, Snyder's re-shoots will allow fans to see more of Flash and Cyborg, big bad Darkseid, and his original dark tone. But the theatrical cut already cost Warner Bros a massive $300 million, meaning as a whole the project has cost close to $400 million to make.

Even worse, there's only a reported four minutes of new footage.

Unfortunately, all of this means that HBO will have to amass close to seven million new subscribers in order to break even. Given that little seems to be changing with the plot of the film, and since Warner have already sank tons of money into the original film, it could be that the Snyder Cut is just a whole lot of work and money for nothing.
